My Duyen Tran has been awarded the May 2022 Outstanding Senior Award for the department of Molecular and Cellular Biology. She is also one of the recipients of the Danny Brower Memorial Scholarship

Dr. Gutenkunst worked with European collaborators who sequenced the DNA of 15 humans from the European Neolithic era (6500 - 8500 years ago). They analyzed the DNA of these ancient humans along with contemporary Europeans to measure how much natural selection had changed over time.

This paper reviews recent advances towards providing the general public with first-hand experiences to microbiology and modern biotechnology, such as novel interactive museum exhibits or hands-on activities for schools.

Congratulations to Ben Atwell who has won the 2022 Molecular and Cellular Biology Outstanding Graduate Student Award in Scholarship. Ben is in the last stage of earning his PhD. “Receiving this award is a nice way to finish. It is exciting to be near the end, and it is super cool to be honored in this way,” said Ben.

Congratulations to Angelica Escoto, who has won the 2022 Molecular and Cellular Biology Outstanding Graduate Student Award in Teaching. “I am very excited and happy. I hope that this award will make me more competitive for my future teaching career.”

Dr. Padi and colleagues administered sulforaphane, a compound that can be extracted from broccoli seeds and sprouts, to a cohort of current smokers. They found that sulforaphane significantly increased detoxification of benzene, the cancer-causing chemical found in cigarette smoke.

The Horton lab, with lead author BMCB Ph.D. student Jonathan Sanchez, has recently determined the high-resolution structure of the N-terminal nuclease domain from the main replicative protein NS1 of human parvovirus B19.

The Horton lab, in collaboration with the laboratory of Dmitry Lyumkis at The Salk Institute for Biological Sciences, recently determined a high-resolution structure of a filament-forming enzyme (SgrAI) which shows how enzyme filamentation activates this enzyme.

Congratulations to Hannah Quick, who has won the May 2022 Excellence in Undergraduate Research Award for the department of Molecular and Cellular Biology (MCB).

AJ Aguilar is a recent MCB alumnus who was also in the MCB Accelerated Master's Program (AMP). He left because of a great opportunity to work for Roche, a global biotech company.
