Congratulations to Ben Atwell who has won the 2022 Molecular and Cellular Biology Outstanding Graduate Student Award in Scholarship. Ben is in the last stage of earning his PhD. “Receiving this award is a nice way to finish. It is exciting to be near the end, and it is super cool to be honored in this way,” said Ben.

Dr. Padi and colleagues administered sulforaphane, a compound that can be extracted from broccoli seeds and sprouts, to a cohort of current smokers. They found that sulforaphane significantly increased detoxification of benzene, the cancer-causing chemical found in cigarette smoke.

The Horton lab, with lead author BMCB Ph.D. student Jonathan Sanchez, has recently determined the high-resolution structure of the N-terminal nuclease domain from the main replicative protein NS1 of human parvovirus B19.

The Horton lab, in collaboration with the laboratory of Dmitry Lyumkis at The Salk Institute for Biological Sciences, recently determined a high-resolution structure of a filament-forming enzyme (SgrAI) which shows how enzyme filamentation activates this enzyme.

AJ Aguilar is a recent MCB alumnus who was also in the MCB Accelerated Master's Program (AMP). He left because of a great opportunity to work for Roche, a global biotech company.

An Associate Professor of Practice in Molecular and Cellular Biology (MCB), Dr. Rezende also directs MCB’s Undergraduate Assessment and Integration, MCB’s Online Education, and has recently developed a new undergraduate certificate in MCB.

Dr. Duhamel with lead author Hui Yang, MCB Postdoc, explored where algae have taken hold in vertebrate fur, on vertebrate surfaces, in vertebrate tissues, and within vertebrate cells.
