Seminar Information

Volcanic eruptions initially produce sterile materials lacking biological activity, creating opportunities for new organisms to colonize. Habitats suitable for pioneer microbial life, such as hot springs and recently cooled rock surfaces and interiors, offer unique insights into how microbial communities develop in extreme environments. In this talk, I will discuss how studying microbial communities in young lava flow fields can inform us about the potential for life on Mars, which was once volcanically and hydrologically active.
