Associate Professor Daniela Zarnescu's research on Amyotrophic Lateral Sclerosis (ALS) has been highlighted in Tucson News Now. ALS, more commonly known as Lou Gehrig's Disease, is a progressive neurodegenerative disease that affects nerve cells in the brain and the spinal cord. ALS patients gradually lose the ability of the brain to control muscle movement, and in the later stages of the disease may become totally paralyzed. I originally entered the College of Life Sciences hoping that my degree would one day lead me to medical school. At 18, I had high hopes for working as a neurosurgeon (one of those “Go Big or Go Home” kinda things).
